Jeep is issuing two separate recalls for the Cherokee SUV due to issues with the same part. Approximately 67,248 Jeep Cherokees from 2014-2017 model years are being recalled because of issues with the Power Transfer Unit (PTU), which is an important part of the all-wheel-drive system.
The PTU may be unable to maintain a connection between the vehicle’s transmission and its front wheels. As a result, the PTU and the transmission are not engaging, which may result in the vehicle’s ability to be put into park while it is stationary, causing it to roll away. It can also impact the vehicle’s ability to stay in motion while driving.
Jeep is aware of one crash that is related to the problem, and it did not result in any injuries.
The Second Recall
There is an accompanying recall that involves Jeep vehicles that already have their PTUs replaced. There are specific replacement parts that may fail and cause the car to need additional work. In response, dealers are conducting a software update and will replace impacted PTUs with a new part. Both 2014 and 2015 Jeep Cherokees come with a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty while the 2016 and 2017 Cherokees have a 5-year/60,000-mile warranty.
