Kia is recalling 140,000 2013 and 2014 Optima sedans due to a fuel leak that could ultimately result in a fire. This is due to a faulty fuel hose that has the potential to deteriorate quickly and develop cracks, allowing for a fuel leak and increasing the risk of a fire. Drivers in affected vehicles may notice a gasoline smell.
The Theta II Engine
Vehicles involved in this recall are powered by different versions of the Theta II engine that is used in both Hyundai and Kia vehicles. It’s important to note that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating over 3,000 reports of fires in vehicles that have this engine, and all fires are unrelated to collisions.
Kia’s Response
The automaker is in the process of developing a fix for the problem and they are not aware of fires, accidents, or injuries as the result of this recall.
